Derrington Abnar was born on November 10, 1973, in Sarasota, Florida to the late Johnnie Abnar and Bettye Spencer. Visitation will be held on Friday, January 20, 2023, from 6-8 PM. Homegoing Services will be held on Saturday, January 21, 2023, 1:00 PM, at Light of the World, 3809 Chapel Drive, Sarasota, FL. The interment will be private.
He was a graduate of Riverview High School; Class of 1989, where he was a standout football player. Derrington attended the University of Georgia and Valley City State University, He had a passion for coaching and started his coaching career at Ringling Redskins. He later found his coaching niche with the Sarasota Lightning Youth Football. Coach “Shun”, ad he preferred to be called, had five children. He raised two of his children, DeShun and Marion, until his health began to fail.
On Monday, January 9, 2023, Derrington DeShun Abnar “Coach Shun” passed away at the age of 49.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Johnnie Abnar, Sr and Bettye Spencer; sisters, Timekqua Burks, and Audrey Abnar, and a close friend Sean Bane.
His children: Maliek and Ariana Leedahl, Derington, DeShaun and Demarion Abnar and stepson, David. Two granddaughters; Two sisters: Fatiya Polk and Rachel Shelley (Carlton); Brother: Johnnie Abnar, Jr. Stepfather: Aston Spencer; Aunt: Pearlene Stephens; Special cousin: Phyliss Woods; Exceptional friends: “The Crew” James Barnes, Amp Campbell, Alvin Collymore, Floyd Hill, Greg Moore, Jamie Roberts, Jose Rosado and Marco Watson; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, friends, fellow coaches, and football players.
