Clara Elizabeth Mays, 85, entered eternal rest on Sunday, May 21, 2023. Born in Sarasota, Florida to Sampson and Daisy (Calvin) Mays, her great grandparents, John and Sally Mays, were one of the founding African-American families of Sarasota’s Newtown community. She worked for many years with her father as attendants of the historic Belle Haven building. Her passion for homemaking and family were always evident in her day to day interactions.
Miss Mays was preceded in death by her parents and her five sisters, Ella Belle Moses; Mary Lucille McKenzie; Cherry Frances Mays Robinson; Evelyn M. Mann; and Iona Loretta Gibbons. She will forever live in the memories of her nieces and nephews.
