Mattie L. Jenkins, 86, of Bradenton, FL, passed away on May 3, 2022. Ms. Jenkins was born in Epps, Louisiana, on January 26, 1936, to the late Allen Lazarous and Mary Lou Ford. Mattie attended the public schools in Louisiana. Mattie was always a hard worker, so in her young adult years, Mattie left Louisiana and ended up in Mississippi. There she met and married the love of her life, Willie F. Newell. The two later moved to Sarasota, FL. Mattie worked in the hospitality field. She was also a baker and was known for her wonderful poundcakes.
Mattie joined Osprey Avenue Church of Christ. She was a faithful member and never missed a service until her health started to fail. Mattie’s husband passed in the early 1990’s. She later married, Herbert Jenkins. Although Mattie never had children of her own, she was a mother to many.
She was predeceased by her husband, (Herbert Jenkins); parents, Allen L. Ford and Mary Lou Ford; sisters: Carrie, Florence, and Gladys; brothers: David, Samuel, Herman and Hervie.
She leaves to cherish her memories four special nieces and nephews. She helped to raise Demetris Ford of Bradenton, FL, Milton (Maria) Buckley of Bradenton, FL, Angelo Buckley of Sarasota, FL, and Angelina (Kirk) Jefferson of Ruskin, FL. She also leaves other special nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. She will truly be missed.
Visitation will be on Friday, May 13, 2022, 6-8 p.m. at Chandler’s Funeral Home, 1425 Dr. Martin L. King, Jr., Way, Sarasota, FL. Homegoing Services will be on Saturday, May 14, 2022, at the C. L. Chandler Memorial Chapel, 1425 Dr. Martin L. King, Jr. Way, Sarasota, FL. Chandler’s Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
